Why Laser Therapy?

Laser treatments can help speed up healing, strengthen muscle and tissue, improve mobility, and enhance your dog's overall quality of life almost immediately.  Laser treatment for dogs applies deep-penetrating light to promote a chain of chemical reactions known as photobiostimulation. Pain relief is provided by reducing the inflammation through vasodilation and by activating the lymphatic drainage system, thus draining swollen areas. The lasers also stimulate nerve cells that block pain signals from being transmitted to the brain, thereby decreasing nerve sensitivity. Because there is less inflammation, less swelling and an interruption of pain signals to the brain, the dog will experience less pain. Laser treatments for dogs also stimulate the production of high levels of naturally produced endorphins which further counteract your dog's pain.

Our Equipment

Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (LASER) is delivered by a mobile unit that takes into consideration the weight, condition, skin colour and the condition it is treating, as well as different size probes being available for different sizes of dogs and the contact required.

There is a separate room for laser therapy as protective equipment much be worn due to the laser wavelengths. Laser therapy treats a wide variety of conditions such as pre-surgical, post-surgical, acute, and chronic disease states. Laser therapy can effectively reduce pain and inflammation associating with acute and chronic conditions such as: sprains and strains, osteoarthritis, wounds, fractures etc. Treatments are non-invasive, drug and surgery-free and can be administered between 1-10 minutes. Owners enjoy being involved with their pet’s treatment as they see their loved one quickly relax as their pain is soothed away. 

The laser can be adjusted for each dog; Our laser equipment has 5 different heads, so for example, when treating deep tissue structures then a contact massage ball will be used to encourage deeper penetration by displacing excess fluids. Different sized heads can also be an advantage for administering treatments that requires precision.

How does it work?

Laser light at 670, 808 or 904 nm is delivered to the tissue via a probe in contact mode. The Light enters the cell's mitochondria and is absorbed by the chromophores, including the protein cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) which then increases activity. 

As a result, this heightened activity releases three molecules;

1. Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP): increases cell's ability to fight infection and accelerate healing processes.

2. Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS): Activates transcription factors; positively impacting cellular repair and healing.

3. Nitric Oxide (NO): Increases circulation, decreases inflammation and enhances oxygen and immune cell transport throughout tissue.
