Rehabilitation for CDRM

Introduction

Flora is a 14-year-old Labrador who continues to have a regular multi-modal treatment plan to support her diagnosis of Degenerative Myelopathy. As Flora moves through her older years, it is important that we work to help maintain her mobility as deterioration is further influenced by her diagnosis as well as her age. Degenerative Myelopathy is a spinal condition which effects mobility causing weakness, paralysis, and incontinence.

Treatment Plan

Flora used to undergo regular Hydrotherapy sessions but due to a recent diagnosis of laryngeal paralysis and her getting very excited in the pool causing her breathing to become too high, she now undergoes a combination of LASER, PMFT and INDIBA treatment on alternative weeks. This combination really helps to maintain her mobility, particularly when she begins to appear weaker through the hindlimbs, with a treatment, we are able to notice a positive impact in the hours following the session.

Hydrotherapy can be a wonderful treatment for many dogs, but it's important to adapt the treatment plan as needed to accommodate Flora's specific health needs. Switching to LASER, PMFT, and INDIBA treatments seems like a thoughtful adjustment to her care plan, especially considering her laryngeal paralysis and the challenges it presents during Hydrotherapy sessions.

Progress and Outcome

Regular treatment sessions on a weekly basis can indeed help maintain Flora's mobility and quality of life, even as she navigates the challenges of her conditions. It's encouraging that we and her owners are able to observe a positive impact on her mobility shortly after each session.

Conclusion

Continued collaboration with Flora's veterinary team to monitor her condition and adjust her treatment plan as necessary will be key in providing her with the best possible care as she continues to age.
